Looking after your rooftop solar system

Solar systems need little attention, but not none. Simple habits that keep yours safe and generating as designed.

By the AKE Power team

A rooftop solar system has no moving parts on the roof, which is part of why it's low-maintenance. But dust, shade, loose cables and battery care all affect how well — and how safely — it works over the years.

Keep the modules clean

Dust, bird droppings and leaves block sunlight from reaching the cells. Clean the modules with plain water and a soft cloth or sponge, ideally early in the morning or in the evening when they are cool. Avoid abrasive brushes, detergents and high-pressure jets, and never stand or walk on the modules.

Only clean the modules if the roof can be reached safely. If it can't, ask us — working at height without proper access and protection is not worth the risk.

Watch for new shade

A tree that grows, a new water tank or a neighbour's extra floor can shade part of the array. Even partial shade can reduce output noticeably, so keep an eye on what changes around the roof.

Check the inverter

Most inverters show their status on a display or an app. Get used to what normal looks like, and note any warning lights, error messages or sudden drops in generation so you can report them.

Battery care (off-grid and hybrid)

  • Keep the battery area clean, dry and well ventilated.
  • Don't place anything on top of batteries or block their airflow.
  • Follow the maintenance guidance for your battery type.

Leave the electrical work to technicians

Don't open junction boxes, combiner boxes, the inverter or distribution boards. If you see damaged cables, burn marks, unusual smells or water in an enclosure, switch off as instructed and call us.

Regular inspections by a technician — checking the structure, connections, earthing and protection devices — are the best way to keep the system safe and working as designed. Long-term maintenance is part of what we offer after handover.
